Government Briefings & Events
Briefings, demonstrations, and events provide a great forum to educate policymakers about key issues and bring awareness to the work of Active Policy Solutions’ clients. Our work includes:
- Coordinated a live streamed call for the PLAY Sports Coalition Membership with former Rep. Max Rose (D-NY) to raise awareness for the COVID-19 Youth Sports and Working Families Relief Act.
- In conjunction with Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX)’s introduction of a resolution designating May as Health and Fitness Month, APS coordinated an expo featuring healthy eating tips, live fitness demonstrations, information on how to make physical activity and nutrition a priority year-round and making healthy lifestyle choices.
- We accumulated videos from various clients for May is Health and Fitness Month to create a virtual celebration, due to COVID-19 restrictions, in lieu of the annual in-person Expo. This video was shared from Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX)’s Congressional social media.
- National Council of Youth Sports Congressional Briefing and Expo: APS facilitated a Congressional briefing on behalf of NCYS and the Congressional Youth Sports Caucus. Four-time Olympic medalist and NBC Sports Track and Field Analyst, Ato Boldon, served as a spokesperson for this event. Following the briefing, APS oversaw the production of the Congressional Expo, a showcase of sports-based youth development programs where members of Congress and their staff were able to participate in physical activity sport stations and visit informational booths in the Rayburn House Office Building foyer.
- Positioned Rank One Sport + Health to highlight their research data through participation in the Georgia Legislature’s House Study Committee on Heat Related and Cardiac Injuries, as well as testifying before the Massachusetts Legislature.
- In honor of Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, APS assisted former Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) who co-chaired the Childhood Obesity Task Force, in organizing an event in the Rayburn Foyer showcasing organizations and the work they are doing to address the issue of childhood obesity.
- 25th Anniversary of the ADA Event with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), where APS CEO Terri Lakowski joined former Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan in paying special tribute to the recent OCR guidance to expand sports opportunities for students with disabilities. As part of this celebration, APS secured the participation of our coalition partner, Athletics for All, to host adapted sport stations for the public and students with disabilities.
- Signing of the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sports by the USA Deaf Sports Federation. Active Policy Solutions arranged for former Rep. James Langevin (D-RI) to reserve a room in the Capitol Visitor Center and coordinated this major event attended by members of the deaf athletic community, their friends, families, and supporters.
- Employee Wellness– sponsored by the Wellness Caucus and Congressional Fitness Caucus, this briefing discussed how employee wellness programs can be part of the solution to address our nation’s obesity epidemic. Active Network was featured in this briefing.
- Homelessness and Sport – sponsored by the Congressional Soccer Caucus, Youth Sports Caucus, and Congressional Fitness Caucus, this demonstration showcased what Street Soccer USA, a national nonprofit, was doing to serve the homeless population through its soccer programs.
- Afterschool Programming Congressional Briefing – sponsored by the Afterschool Caucus, this briefing discussed the critical role that organizations such as After-School All-Stars are playing in providing comprehensive afterschool programming for youth.
- White House roundtable discussion to celebrate the 37th Anniversary of Title IX, featuring White House Senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett, Department of Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Russlynn Ali, and legendary female athletes, including Billie Jean King and Dominique Dawes.
