National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association
The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) is the professional association for athletic administrators at middle schools and high schools, and it is comprised of more than 13,500 member athletic administrators nationwide. APS has worked with the NIAAA for 11 years, and highlights of our accomplishments on their behalf include:
- As part of its last reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), APS helped NIAAA obtain clarification from the US Department of Education that athletic administrators should be considered to be school leaders and entitled to reimbursement for their professional development and certification expenses.
- Developed and advanced legislation to provide a tax deduction to coaches and administrators that is currently only available for teachers. This legislation is known as the COACHES Act (HR 3351).
- One of the ways we use government affairs to raise awareness of NIAAA and secondary school athletic administrators is through sharing key accomplishments and awards. We helped draft and submit a Congressional resolution to recognize December 14, 2022, as Interscholastic Athletic Administrators’ Day (SRes 872). As a result of our efforts, this resolution was introduced in the Senate, secured four cosponsors, and passed with unanimous consent.
